Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL) organised a seminar on breast cancer Saturday at Alhamra Hall. A large no of college girls, doctors, paramedical staff and nurses attend it.
According to a press release, renowned oncologist and INMOL Director Dr Abubakar Shahid said that breast cancer was most common cancer in women in modern days. He said all tests, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, PET scan were available at the institute. “Mobile breast unit visits all Punjab and doing mammography scans in rural and urban areas,” he added. He said the risk of death from cancer before 75 years in male was 9.6 per cent and 9.4 per cent in females.
Dr Abubakar, who is also a PhD doctor in breast cancer oncology, said that in year 1990, at least 1,463 oncology patients visited INMOL, 2,234 in 1995, 2,839 in 2005 and 4,087 in 2011.
Dr Amira Shami, consultant oncologist at INMOL, elaborated on role of chemotherapy, hormone and radiation therapy in treatment of breast cancer. She said that mortality from breast cancer was falling because of widespread use of adjutant medical and radiation therapy in addition to surgery.
Dr Zeeshan Raseed Mirza, consultant radiologist, said breast cancer was a leading cause of cancer deaths in Pakistani women. He said that screening mammograms offered the best way to detect breast cancer at initial stage, when treatment was most successful. He said that mammography was safe, quick and relatively painless.
Dr Samina Khokhar, consultant surgeon of INMOL, talked about when a women needed surgery in breast cancer.
